do you think team USA womens gymnastics wil win the team gold at worlds this year?
just wanna have an open discussion about what you think (: in my opinion, team usa is highly equipped and prepared enough to win!
Sorry for the VERY long response. I'm love this kind of thing.
I think that they have a very good chance at winning this year. Although they are weak on bars, they are okay and can make up for it in other events. Their main competition in China, Russia and Romania, which are not looking good for various reasons: China's team is not as strong on vault and they will probably have to rely on girls who cannot be counted on in team finals, i.e. Huang Qiushuang, Sui Lu and Wu Liufang. Romania had a very poor showing at europeans. They have three 5.8 vaults, if everybody does them, but they are not done with great form. Romania is also very weak on bars and has lost it's consistency that won them so many team titles. Russia's problem is that even though Tatiana Nabieva and Aliya Mustafina turned senior this year, Anastasia Grishina and Viktoria Komova who are arguably their best gymnasts are still juniors. Russia also does not have great form. At europeans, they also kind of lacked a third beam worker, even though they had two beam finalists (Myzdrikova is okay, but not great). Great Britain did well at euros, but I don't think that they can make the podium at worlds
I'm into lots of analysis, so this is what team I would like to see and what they would do in team finals:
USA:
Bross (UB BB FX)
Sloan (VT UB FX)
Williams (VT) could take a floor spot OR lose her spot overall
Raisman (VT BB FX)
The last spots come down to who is able to put together a good routine on bars/beam. I think that the possibilities for those spots are Shapiro, Jetter, Caquatto (both of them) and Whitcomb. Sacramone is a big question mark right now.
China:
Huang Qiushuang (VT UB FX)
Sui Lu (BB FX)
Yang Yilin (VT UB)
Deng Linlin (BB FX)
Wu Liufang (BB)
He Kexin (VT UB)
A lot of this team also relies on comebacks, especially Yang Yilin. Jiang Tong has been competing a lot recently, so maybe she is a possibility. Jiang Yuyuan is a possibility as well, depending on how she is looking.
Russia:
Aliya Mustafina (VT UB BB FX) All around in team finals...
Anna Myzdrikova (FX)
Ksenia Afanasyeva (BB FX) If she is doing beam like she was at pacific rim. Could do the other events as well.
Tatiana Nabieva (VT UB)
Ksenia Semenova (UB BB) this depends on if she is able to get her bars back.
Ekaterina Kurbatova (VT) could be used on bars or floor
Again, lots of these spots are questionable. Myzdrikova might upgrade vault, so she could be used there. Kurbatova's european title is the only reason I included her here, honestly. Musina could do something-- she trains a full twisting double layout. Dementyeva has been out but competed recently, so she could be back in it. Pavlova, Lozhechko and Kramarenko are still coming back. Solovyeva can be used on beam.
Romania:
Porgras (UB BB)
Racea (VT UB BB FX)
Haidu (VT BB FX)
Chelaru (VT FX)
Patrascu (UB)
Honestly, I don't know what to do with this team. Romania is not deep at all right now. Comebacks from Izbasa, Dragoi and Tamirjan are possible.
I think that this Russian team would be the team to beat in 2012, but a lot can happen in two years:
Mustafina (VT UB BB FX)
Grishina (UB BB FX)
Komova (VT UB BB FX)
Nabieva (VT)
They don't even need a last team member, although if I were to do anything I would remove Mustafina from beam and either Komova or Mustafina from floor. Grishina has the easiest floor routine of them all, but she should upgrade and I love her choreography. Those spots are probably between Afanasyeva, Paseka, Sidorova, Malikova, Semenova and Myzdrikova.
The all around should come down to Bridget Sloan, Rebecca Bross, Aliya Mustafina, Yang Yilin/Deng Linlin/Huang Qiushuang, Amelia Racea, Youna Dufournet, Lauren Mitchell and then a second Romanian and Russian. Could be Porgras/Chelaru/Haidu for Romania and Semenova/Afanasyeva for Russia.
